How Do I Take Good Gift Basket Photographs?

“I don’t have a dedicated area to take pictures of my gift baskets before they’re sent to customers. How can I take attractive pictures that I can show to other clients?”

You are doing the right thing by taking pictures of your completed gift baskets before each one leaves your office. Sharing these pictures with prospective buyers in print and online is one of the most-important parts of your marketing plan.

Thankfully, this problem is easily remedied with a digital camera (which is quite affordable today) and a canvas or sheet in solid-colored background, preferably white, off white, or cream.

You’ll find digital cameras in every electronic store, superstore, and at major retailers. Today’s cameras provide sharp prints in 14 megapixel resolution, though a camera with a minimum 10 megapixels will render great photos.

The canvas or sheet material is available at art stores where you can also invest in a stand that holds the canvas high and horizontal behind the gift basket, which you place on a suitably-sized table.

It’s also advisable to invest in a camera tripod to ensure your pictures are sharp and clear.

“How did you make the background for taking your pictures?”

The background in my photos is whatever happens to be there. Sometimes I use a white sheet or canvas on a back wall to make a one-color background, and other times I just shoot the photo.

I choose one setting over the other according to my location, available materials, and reason for taking the picture.

I’m more meticulous when choosing a background when taking pictures for books such as How to Start a Home-Based Gift Basket Business and The Gift Basket Design Book. But I simply enjoy snapping and not worrying about what’s in back.

“I’m just starting my business. my problem is I have limited funds to take pictures of my gift baskets. Do u have any ideas.”

A lot of money isn’t required to take gift basket photographs. What’s needed is:

Camera. Digital models are preferred to quickly add photos to the Web and print materials.

Faux/Plain Setting. A plain background ensures that your basket is the only image in the photo. Such a setting is shown in the above picture.

If you cannot afford a camera, perhaps a relative or friend will allow you to borrow theirs until you have funds to buy your own.
